In case you get tired of
fishing, boating, crabbing, shrimping, and
relaxing, (whew), there are several other
things of interest in the area.
Just down the road, is the state run
marine facility, LUMCON,
(http://www.lumcon.edu/) which is an
educational facility associated with
Louisiana State University. Shrimp
sheds and oyster shucking houses can also
be visited to see just where that great
Louisiana seafood comes from. During
season, visitors can purchase the freshest
seafood available, everything from crabs,
shrimp, and crawfish to alligator meat.
In the nearby town of Chauvin, is an
outdoor "museum" and visitor's center with
folk art from a local artist. Chauvin also
has the nearest grocery store, the Piggly
Wiggly, for those little items you may
have forgotten to bring with you.
In Louisiana, there is almost always a
weekend festival going on somewhere
celebrating the heritage that is unique to
this area. To find out what is going on
when you are visiting, or to plan your
visit around a particular event, check out
www.cajunradio.org/louisianafestivals.html.
Just two miles up the road is Cecil
Lapeyrous's General Store. The owners,
Cecil and Etta, welcome you to stop by and
purchase any items you may run short of.
They carry fuel, fishing licenses, bait,
beer, soft drinks and snack items. They
recently added an ATM machine just
in case you run short of cash. While you
are there, take a minute and browse the
store full of antique and interesting
items from years past. Cecil's family is a
third generation on the bayou family and
he knows a lot of interesting history of
the area.
